Treatment of Wastewater from Thermal Desorption for Remediation of Oil-Contaminated Soil by the Combination of Multiple Processes

Thermal desorption (TD) is one of the methods commonly used to remediate contaminated soil. However, as water liquid adsorbent off-gas treatment system in TD stage, wastewater generated after multiple cycles stage has low biodegradability and contains complex organic pollutants. In addition petroleum hydrocarbon, there are also a lot ammonia, emulsified oil, phenols, aldehydes, ketones. this study, effective removal contaminants was achieved using combined process demulsification flocculation (DF), ammonia stripping (AS), Fenton oxidation (FO), reverse osmosis (RO). The optimized, maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH3-N, turbidity, extractable hydrocarbons (EPH) efficiencies reached 93.3%, 79.8%, 97.6%, 99.9%, respectively. FO key for efficient contaminants. Ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis), excitation-emission matrix (EEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) showed that refractory macromolecular pollutants were removed, especially aromatics, conjugated aldehydes or ketones, further ring cleavage benzene rings carbocycles with carbon double bonds observed. cost-benefit analysis carried out. operating cost 8.73 US$/m3, indicating involved moderate costs recalcitrant treatment. No studies have been published on processes from remediation oil-contaminated soils. Therefore, study could provide fundamental information based experimental results guidelines engineering applications.
